Fela director Jasmin Mozaffari was awarded the Short Cuts Award for Best Canadian Film at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival. “Displaying great mastery of craft, this incredibly ambitious film excels in its direction, performances, sound, and picture, with every frame exhibiting love and intention,” said the jury’s statement. “The film left us with one word collectively: wow.”

Set against the backdrop of the 1979 Iranian hostage crisis, Jasmin Mozaffari’s film Motherland crafts a deeply moving portrayal of the alienation often carried by a diaspora. Winner of Best Canadian Short Film at the Toronto International Film Festival, the narrative chronicles Babak (Behtash Fazlali), an Iranian university student confronting escalating prejudice as he ventures to meet the father of his American fiancé, Katie (Oriana Leman).
